Marine mammals play fundamental roles in the functioning of marine and estuarine ecosystems. They are key species in food webs, in promoting the nutrient cycle and as effective indicators of environmental health, amongst other things. Given their high species diversity and abundance in coastal environments, it is important to record stranding events occurring in these areas, as they provide valuable information on the ecology and biology of the individuals found. The aim of this study was to carry out a description and subsequent spatio-temporal analysis of stranding events (SE) that have occurred in the south-east of the province of Buenos Aires (PBA), covering the municipalities of General Alvarado, General Pueyrredon and Partido de Mar Chiquita, over the last 50 years, and to relate these to the type of coastline and degree of urbanization. Data recorded between 1973 and 2024 were compiled by examining primary sources (records from of the Marine Mammal Biology, Ecology and Conservation Research Group at the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, UNMdP, and the Institute of Marine and Coastal Research, UNMdPCONICET), and secondary sources such as museums, rehabilitation centers, the media, literature, etc., using search terms in both Spanish and English. A total of 139 stranding events were recorded, involving 26 species, with small cetaceans (individuals up to 5 meters in total length, TL) accounting for 65.38 %; the dominant species was Pontoporia blainvillei. The remaining 34.62 % consisted of strandings of large cetaceans (individuals over 5 meters in total length, TL), including large whales, sperm whales and orcas. On average, 2.67 ± 5 strandings were recorded per year, with an increase over the years. Most stranding cases occurred on sandy beaches and in areas of greater urban development (very high human footprint). The majority of small cetacean strandings took place during the warmer seasons of the year, whilst those involving large cetaceans occurred during the colder seasons. These studies highlight the enormous diversity of cetaceans inhabiting the Buenos Aires coastline and provide highly useful information that enables the design of health control measures for the species and more effective management, with a view to more efficient monitoring and management of cetacean stranding cases in the Buenos Aires regionen
